A record year for the Seawolves!

Stony Brook University baseball is coming off a record season which they became the first team from Northeast Region to advance to College World Series since 1987 and a final national ranking of 7th in the final Baseball America poll.

This 2012 Stony Brook Seawolf team set the school record with 52 wins and bolstered most wins by any team in Division 1 Baseball. A record seven players taken in 2012 MLB Draft including five in first 12 rounds, highlighted by first round San Diego Padres selection Travis Jankowski. Camp Director Matt Senk also garnered NCBWA National Coach of the Year and CollegeInsider.com National Co-Coach of the Year.

Steve Hassan

 

Volunteer Assistant Coach

Steve Hassan is in his first season as volunteer assistant coach for Stony Brook's baseball team. Hassan comes to the Seawolves after six seasons as the recruiting coordinator and assistant coach at Farmingdale State.

Hassan, under head coach and former Major League catcher Keith Osik, helped turn around a Rams team that was 7-22 in 2005 to 19-19 in 2006 and then blossomed into a five-time Skyline Conference champion. During the five-year title run, Farmingdale State made five NCAA regional appearances and won the regional championship in 2009, leading to a Div. III World Series appearance.

During his tenure at Farmingdale State, Hassan coached 37 All-Conference players, 19 All-Region selections, three Gold Glove winners, one conference Player of the Year, two conference Pitchers of the Year and two Rookies of the Year.

Matt Senk

 

Head Coach

Matt Senk recently completed his 22nd season at the helm of the Stony Brook baseball program during which he led the Seawolves to a progam record and NCAA-leading 52 wins as well as a memorable run to the College World Series.

The 2012 Seawolves squad captured the attention of the nation, beating perennial powers Miami (FL) and LSU on their way to Omaha. SBU was just the second No. 4 seed to ever advance to the College World Series and became the first Northeast school since 1986 to advance to the CWS.

Stony Brook Director of Athletics Jim Fiore announced on July 31, 2012 that Senk's contract had been extended through the 2017 season.

Joe Pennucci

 

Assistant Coach

Joe Pennucci recently completed his sixth season on Matt Senk's staff and was promoted from assistant coach to associate head coach in August 2012.

The Seawolves recruiting coordinator, Pennucci has been instrumental in the program's success since his arrival. Stony Brook has been to three NCAA Regionals in his tenure including this year's memorable run to the College World Series when SB won a school record and NCAA-best 52 games.

Pennucci has shown that he can recruit and help develop players who can play at the next level as Stony Brook had a record seven players taken in the 2012 MLB Draft including the program's first-ever first-round selection in Travis Jankowski.

Mike Marron

 

Assistant Coach

Mike Marron joined the Stony Brook coaching staff in September 2009 after four years as an assistant coach at UMass-Lowell. Marron serves as the pitching coach in addition to helping with recruiting.

Marron guided the Stony Brook pitching staff to an America East best 3.36 ERA in 2011, which ranked 39th in the country. The Seawolves staff also ranked 14th in the country in walks per nine innings (2.62) and 16th in hits per nine innings (7.99).

In addition, junior Nick Tropeano was named a second team All-American and was drafted in the fifth round of the 2011 MLB First-Year Player Draft by the Houston Astros. The first player in America East history to be named Pitcher of the Year twice, Tropeano was fifth in the nation in strikeouts per nine innings (11.52), seventh in wins (12) and 25th in ERA (1.84).
