“The Pack” Baseball Academy at Sam Houston State

“For the strength of The Pack is the wolf, but the strength of the wolf is The Pack.” – Rudyard Kipling

For the past eight years there has not been a more dynamic force in college baseball than “The Pack”. Developing players while piling up huge numbers and playing the game hard, fast, and free has become a trademark of The Pack.

Standing on its Four Pillars: Attitude, Approach, Intensity, and Toughness (AAIT), The Pack approaches the game from an unconventional mindset. While many out there search out improvement on their physical skills from individual lessons, specialized camps, video analysis, and even the latest and greatest equipment and swing trainers; “The Pack Mentality” seeks out to condition the mind, body, and spirit while always striving to tap into the inner Aggressor and Competitor within each of us. The Pack also teaches the essential physical keys that can unlock and develop each and every ballplayer to become the absolute best they can be with their individual skill set.

Remember: “Personal Results are fleeting and very temporary, but…your commitment to Team is forever.”

Head Coach Matt Deggs, in stops at UL-Lafayette, Texas A&M, and Arkansas is the creator of an unconventional and very widely respected style of play known simply as “The Pack”. Coach Deggs’ Teams, offenses, and players have experienced some big time success utilizing “The Pack Mentality”. Coach Deggs’ most recent successes occurred over the last two years with the Ragin’ Cajuns of UL-Lafayette. “The Pack” helped produce an overall record of 101-30, which was best in the nation. The Cajuns offense led the nation in homeruns, runs scored, slugging percentage, and total bases. The Pack produced five All-Americans and ten players that were signed or drafted by professional baseball. The Cajuns ended the 2014 regular season as the unanimous #1 ranked Team in the country in all five major polls.

All high school and junior college players are invited to the January Showcase Camp at Sam Houston State.  This camp is an opportunity for high school and juco players to participate in an evaluation setting in front of the SHSU coaching staff.  Each position player will be evaluated in a 60 yard sprint, a defensive skill session, and batting practice on the field.  Each pitcher will throw a bullpen to a catcher and be evaluated for velocity, command, and quality of pitches.  Every player will receive a written evaluation from the camp staff.  All camp activities will be conducted at the top-flight baseball facilities of Sam Houston State, including beautiful Don Sanders Stadium and our indoor hitting facility. Our new artificial playing surface will allow us to run events in almost any weather conditions.  Our showcases are the best way for the elite players to show their skills to our coaching staff.
