On February 21, 1987, Grand Canyon University’s baseball field was dedicated and named in honor of Dr. Dave Brazell, a man whose name is synonymous with baseball at Canyon.
The founder and developer of Canyon baseball, Brazell coached the ‘Lopes for 28 seasons, compiling a record of 728-385-8. His teams won eight NAIA District Titles, four NAIA Area II Titles and one NAIA National Title. Brazell’s clubs made four appearances at the NAIA College World Series.
A member of the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, Brazell was twice named the NAIA Coach of the Year and had his No. 20 uniform retired in 1982. Brazell currently serves as Canyon’s golf tournament director, after serving as the men’s golf coach for over 20 years.
Coach Brazell is honored and respected at Grand Canyon University as a man who taught so many the meaning of dedication. His leadership and commitment to excellence have been instrumental in the development of the school’s athletic program.
