URI Baseball Participates in Walk Now for Autism Event

Rams join over 3,000 Rhode Island walkers raising awareness and funds for autism research.

On Sunday, Sept. 13, the University of Rhode Island baseball team took part in the 2009 Southern New England Walk Now For Autism event, held at Colt State Park in Bristol, R.I. The Rams joined more than 3,000 individuals who walked to raise over $191,000 for autism research.

"We're always happy to get together as a team and help raise awareness for autism," said senior captain Oliver Palmer. "It was amazing to see all the people who came from all over to take part in the event. Its a good feeling knowing that we were able to help make a difference."

Supporting the cause is especially important to head coach Jim Foster, as his daughter Delaney is affected by Autism. To make a contribution to The Autism Project on behalf of Delaney Foster/URI Baseball, please click here.

Walk Now for Autism, the nation's largest grassroots autism walk program, is Autism Speaks' signature fundraising and awareness event, taking place in communities across the United States, as well as in Canada and the United Kingdom. Powered by volunteers and families with loved ones on the autism spectrum, this successful grassroots fundraising effort not only generates vital funds for autism research, but also raises awareness about the increasing prevalence of autism and the need for increased research funding to combat this complex disorder.

Facility
Built in memory of former Rhode Island baseball and football coach, Bill Beck Field originally opened in 1966 and has since served as the home of the Rams.

In November of 2007, an anonymous donor pledged $1-million to the Rhody baseball program, initiating facility renovations designed to equip the Rams with one of the finest ballparks in all of New England. Seventeen months and $1.4-million dollars later, the 2009 Rhode Island baseball team has a completely resurfaced field consisting of the same artificial FieldTurf used by the Minnesota Twins, Tampa Bay Rays and Toronto Blue Jays. Also included in the renovation project were a new backstop, scoreboard, fencing and bullpens.

Aside from providing URI with an outstanding competitive advantage, the improved facility also requires significantly less maintenance which, in turn, allows the team to spend more time on the field throughout the year. After additional fundraising goals are met, the Rams plan to construct a hitting barn as well as improve the grandstand/bleacher/pressbox setup.
