The inaugural schedule for the CSUB baseball team, released Monday, features an array of opponents, none bigger than the defending NCAA Division I National Champions, and Valley rival, Fresno State, whom the Roadrunners will take on during a five-game series in early April. Bill Kernen was named the Head Coach of CSUB's baseball program on May 17, 2007, and will lead the Roadrunners as baseball becomes the university's 19th sport as part of their move to NCAA Division I status which began in the 2006-07 year. They will field their first team in the spring of 2009.
In many ways, Kernen is the perfect fit for a fledgling program at a university making the transition from NCAA Division?II to Division I. As head coach at Cal State Northridge from 1989 through 1995, Kernen led the Matadors through the transition from Division II to Division?I play. More than just make the transition, Kernen led CSUN to a 44-18-1 record, the West Regional championship game and a top 10 ranking in the final NCAA Division I poll in their first season of DI play.
Kernen posted a 240-154-3 record in seven seasons as head coach at CSUN. He led the Matadors to the NCAA Division II title game in 1990 and a berth in the NCAA Division I regional finals in 1991.
Kernen began his collegiate coaching career at Cal State Fullerton in 1978. The Titans were then a fledgling NCAA Division I program in their own right, having just left the CCAA three years earlier. In five seasons as Fullerton's pitching coach, he helped guide the Titans to five NCAA Tournament appearances, including two trips to the College World Series and a national title in 1979.
Kernen left Fullerton following the 1982 season to take over the family's business intrests when his father fell ill. After his father's passing, he returned for the 1987 season before following Titan Head Coach Augie Garrido to the University of Illinois in 1988. He left Illinois for the head job at Northridge in 1989 and stayed with the Matadors through the 1995 season.
Jody Robinson
Assistant Coach: Cal State Bakersfield
Jody Robinson, former assistant coach to CSUB Head Coach Bill Kernen at Cal State Northridge and a fellow assistant coach at Cal State Fullerton, has been named the head assistant coach of the CSUB baseball program. Robinson's main duties will include running the Roadrunner offense, serving as the team's hitting instructor and infielders' coach.
Robinson and Kernen first joined forces as assistant coaches at Cal State Fullerton in the late 1970's through 1981. During that time, the Titans, who had just made the transition to Division I in 1975, earned five NCAA Tournament appearances, including two trips to the College World Series and a national championship title in 1979.
Robinson moved on to be named the head coach at Long Beach City College from 1982-85, where he led the Vikings to a runner-up finish in the Metropolitan Conference, falling to eventual state champion L.A. Harbor. He then spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Cerritos Community College, which won state championships in 1985 and 1987.
Robinson and Kernen teamed up briefly in 1988, both serving as assistant coaches to former Titan Head Coach Augie Garrido, this time at the University of Illinois. Robinson remained with the Illini for three seasons, helping the team to Big 10 Championships in 1989 and 1990.
In 1991, Robinson returned to California where Kernen was in his second season as the head coach at Cal State Northridge, leading the Matadors through the transition from Division II to Division?I play. After helping CSUN to a 44-18-1 record, the West Regional championship game and a top 10 ranking in the final NCAA Division I poll in their first season of DI play, Robinson was named the head coach at Loyola Marymount, where he guided the Lions to a 109 win from 1992-1996. While there, he also oversaw fundraising efforts for the construction of a baseball weight facility and upgrades to the Lions' baseball field.

In the summer of 2007, Machado was the pitching coach for the Kenai Peninsula Oilers, who went 27-12 and earned a berth in the 2007 NBC World Series. The pitching staff, which featured the No. 1 and No. 5 rated professional prospects in the league, compiled the second best team ERA (2.54) in the Alaska League.
Machado returned to coach the Oilers in the summer of 2008, turning out four all-league pitchers. The staff set a team and league record with a combined ERA of 2.11, helping the Oilers to a 30-17 record.

CSUB Camp FAQs
Q. What is your refund policy?
A. We do not offer refunds on canceled campers, just a future camp credit if you decide to cancel, but we do have what is called "Cancellation Protection".
We offer basic Cancellation Protection to allow participants some peace of mind in case plans change. This allows us to keep our prices low and provide the best service possible. Due at the time of registration, Cancellation Protection entitles you to a full refund of camp fees should you cancel your registration more than 14 days prior to the start of an overnight camp, and 7 days prior to the start of a day camp. If you cancel within 14 or 7 days of the start of your session, we will give you a camp credit for all money paid.
The credit is valid for three years from camp date at any of our camps, clinics or prospect events. Credit with insurance is transferable to family members or friends, and good toward a future camp.
Q. What should I bring to my baseball camp or showcase camp?
A. Many times the camp itself will have a recommended list of items to bring to camp, but here are a few things to help you. All position players should bring a bat and glove. Look like a baseball player by wearing a hat, jersey, belt, baseball socks, etc. You need to look the part. If you are a catcher, have your own gear. Hitters, bring your bat and helmet just in case. Don't expect to use the college's equipment and you must be ready to go! Borrow something from a teammate or coach if you do not have one.
