Five Lions earn all GSC Baseball Honors!

The University of North Alabama placed six players on the 2008 All-Gulf South Conference baseball team, with three Lions chosen first-team All-GSC.

In voting by the league's head baseball coaches, UNA first baseman Josh Graham, outfielder Jeffery Ritter and second baseman Matt Horton were first-team All-GSC picks. Outfielder Qualon Millender, shortstop Cole Mitchell and pitcher Brennen Auerbach were second-team All-GSC selections.

Graham, a senior from Pontotoc, Miss., hit .415 for UNA this season with eight home runs and 50 runs batted in. Ritter, a junior from South Rockwood, Mich., was a unanimous first-team All-GSC pick after hitting .424 with seven homers and 52 RBI. Horton, a senior from Cleveland, Ala., was a first-team All-GSC choice for the second straight year after hitting .365 with 38 runs scored and 26 runs batted in.

Millender, a junior from Talladega, Ala., hit .358 with 48 runs scored and 19 stolen bases. Mitchell, a junior from Lester, Ala., hit .354 with 41 runs scored and 38 runs batted in. Auerbach, a junior from Olathe, Kan., posted a 4-3 record in his first season with the Lions.

Mike Keehn

Head Coach: University of North Alabama

After 20 seasons as an assistant coach at the University of North Alabama, Mike Keehn was given the reigns of the Lion baseball program today (November 5) when he was named as UNA's head baseball coach at the school's weekly Lion Lunch at the Florence Country Club.

Keehn has been an instrumental part of North Alabama's tremendous success over the last two decades, first as a graduate assistant and then as a full-time assistant coach. UNA has enjoyed 20 straight winning seasons with Keehn on staff and has posted a combined 720-318-7 record over that time. UNA has won four Gulf South Conference baseball titles and made seven NCAA Tournament appearances since Keehn's arrival in Florence.

In addition to his coaching duties, Keehn also helped develop the University Field infield into one of the best playing surfaces in the country and played a major recruiting role in helping the Lions continue to sign top players each season.Keehn has also handled several of the Lions' fund-raising efforts. With a wealth of playing and coaching experience behind him, Keehn will lead the Lions into their 2009 season-opener on February 1 at home against Fort Hays State of Kansas. UNA returns 16 lettermen and six starters from last season's team that went 29-21. An infielder at Kearney State College (now the University of Nebraska-Kearney), where he earned honorable mention All-America honors, Keehn was drafted and signed by the Texas Rangers organization.

Matt Hancock

Assistant Coach: University of North Alabama

Matt Hancock will be in his fourth season as a member of the University of North Alabama coaching staff this Spring, but his first as the Lions' full-time assistant coach. Hancock was a one-year student assistant coach with the Lions and served the last two years as a graduate assistant. His primary duties have been with the UNA pitchers.

Hancock was a four-year letterman for the Lions as a pitcher from 2002-05 and posted a 20-5 career record on the mound at UNA. He was 6-0 as a freshman, 5-0 as a sophomore, 2-2 as a junior and 7-3 as a senior. His 20 wins rank third best in school history. Hancock pitched 206.6 innings in 58 career appearances for the Lions, striking out 128 batters while walking just 46.

"I think from him being in our program as both a player and coach, he understands our program and is a good fit in trying to continue our success," said UNA head coach Mike Keehn, who is set to begin his first season as UNA's head coach after 20 years as an assistant at the school. "He has done a good job working with our pitchers and has been instrumental in signing some players as a graduate assistant coach. He'll be an even greater asset to our program as an assistant coach."

Hancock pitched 206.6 innings in 58 career appearances for the Lions, striking out 128 batters while walking just 46. As a senior, Hancock helped UNA to a Gulf South Conference East Division title that included 16 straight league wins and a 39-19 overall record. UNA advanced to the championship game of the GSC Tournament and he was an All-GSC Tournament selection. He received his B.S. degree in History from UNA and is in the Health and Physical Education graduate program.

Mitch Hill

Grad Assistant Coach

Mitch Hill is in his first season as a graduate assistant coach with the Lions after serving as a student assistant coach in 2008. Hill was a member of the UNA pitching staff from 2003-04 and 2006-07. The 2006 season was his most successful on the mound as he posted a 3-0 record in 18 appearances and had a 2.66 earned run average.

Hill was redshirted at UNA in 2003 and then lettered on the Lion pitching staff in 2004, 2006 and 2007. He had 56 total innings pitched in his career.

A native of Florence, Ala., Hill prepped at Wilson High School where he was an all-county and all-state selection.

Josh Graham

Student Assistant Coach

After two seasons playing first base for the Lions, Josh Graham will be in his first season as a student assistant coach at UNA in 2009. Last season Graham led UNA with a .420 batting average, going 55-for-131 at the plate. He had eight home runs, 15 doubles and drove in 52 runs.

Graham was a first-team All-Gulf South Conference selection in voting by the league's head coaches in 2008. As a junior in 2007, Graham hit .237 with nine homers, 15 doubles and 42 runs batted in.

A native of Pontotoc, Miss., Graham lettered in basketball and football at Pontotoc High School.

Q. What should I bring to my baseball camp or showcase camp?

A. Many times the camp itself will have a recommended list of items to bring to camp, but here are a few things to help you. All position players should bring a bat and glove. Look like a baseball player by wearing a hat, jersey, belt, baseball socks, etc. You need to look the part. If you are a catcher, have your own gear. Hitters, bring your bat and helmet just in case. Don't expect to use the college's equipment and you must be ready to go! Borrow something from a teammate or coach if you do not have one.

Q. How do I prepare for a baseball camp or showcase?

A. Be in good physical and mental shape. As always you should be eating well with a proper diet for a athlete. Have your arm in shape and ready to go. Go into it with a positive attitude. Attending a college camp is a terrific opportunity to be evaluated by a college coaching staff and you want to be prepared.

 

Q. What is your refund policy?

A. We do not offer refunds on canceled campers, just a future camp credit if you decide to cancel, but we do have what is called "Cancellation Protection".

We offer basic Cancellation Protection to allow participants some peace of mind in case plans change. This allows us to keep our prices low and provide the best service possible. Due at the time of registration, Cancellation Protection entitles you to a full refund of camp fees should you cancel your registration more than 14 days prior to the start of an overnight camp, and 7 days prior to the start of a day camp. If you cancel within 14 or 7 days of the start of your session, we will give you a camp credit for all money paid.

The credit is valid for three years from camp date at any of our camps, clinics or prospect events. Credit with insurance is transferable to family members or friends, and good toward a future camp.
