Baseball Recruiting Class Ranked No. 11 By BA

If recruiting is indeed the lifeblood of a college athletics program, then the NC State baseball program should be in great shape.

On Tuesday, Baseball America released its annual national rankings of college baseball recruiting classes, and the Durham-based publication ranked NC State's 15-man class as the No. 11 class in the nation.

The Wolfpack's recruiting class - assembled by associate head coach, pitching coach and recruiting coordinator Tom Holliday and assistant coach Chris Hart - has been impressive in fall workouts. Several newcomers figure to push for playing time when the 2010 college baseball season begins in February.

"We're very happy to receive this kind of recognition for our recruiting class from a respected national publication like Baseball America," Wolfpack head coach Elliott Avent said. "Coach Holliday and Coach Hart worked extremely hard to sign a strong recruiting class. We needed immediate and long-term help, and we feel that this class will provide both."

NC State's newcomers will be on display along with the rest of the Wolfpack as fall practice winds down next weekend with the annual intersquad fall world series. Single games will be played at Doak Park at Dail Field on Friday, October 30; Saturday, October 31; and Sunday, November 1. Gametimes will be announced later on gopack.com.

Elliott Avent

Head Coach: North Carolina State University

Elliott Avent's legacy with the Wolfpack has taken clear shape - a legacy of victories and of individual and collective achievement.

NC State has had just 16 head coaches in 102 years of varsity baseball, and only three of them coached the Wolfpack longer than Avent, whose 416 career victories with the Wolfpack rank him second in the history of the program, behind only legendary Sam Esposito.

Avent has taken the Wolfpack to eight NCAA regionals and one NCAA Super Regional. He has coached 10 All-Americans in 11 years. NC State has produced five first-team All-Americans in its 102-year history. Avent coached three of them. His players have earned first-team All-ACC 19 times and made second team all-conference 16 times. Major League Baseball has drafted 42 of Avent's players, including 23 in the last five years. Avent was named ACC and National Coach of the Year in 2003, and was selected for the USA Baseball coaching staff in 2004.

Tom Holliday

Assistant Coach: North Carolina State University

Tom Holliday joined the NC State baseball coaching staff on July 7, 2006, as associate head coach.

Holliday, who served as pitching coach at the University of Texas from 2004-06, brings 31 years of coaching experience at the collegiate level to the Wolfpack staff.

He is widely respected throughout the sport.

Chris Hart

Assistant Coach: North Carolina State University

Chris Hart is a former infielder at Florida State, is in his fourth season with the NC State baseball program, his second as an on-field member of the coaching staff, and his first as a full-time assistant coach. Hart spent the 2007 season as the Wolfpack's volunteer assistant coach, and the two years prior to that as the program's director of baseball operations. Hart coaches the hitters, infielders and catchers, and will assist Tom Holliday with the program's recruiting.

Brian Ward

Assistant Coach: North Carolina State University

Brian Ward, one of the best hitters in NC State history, joined the Wolfpack coaching staff in September 2006 as a volunteer coach. Ward will help assistant coach Chris Hart in working with the Wolfpack's hitters and infielders.

As outstanding hitter in two seasons at NC State, 1998-99, Ward came to Raleigh following two all-star seasons for Coach Ernie Rosseau at Brevard Community College in Melbourne, Fla. At Brevard, Ward won back-to-back Florida juco batting championships, hitting .434 with 10 homers and 45 RBIs as a freshman in 1996, and .471 with 12 doubles, three triples, four homers and 45 RBIs as a sophomore in 1997. He was conference player of the year and first-team all-state both years.
