Catholic University Baseball: A Tradition of Excellence

The Cardinal Baseball tradition includes famous ties to the New York Yankees. Brian Cashman, currently in his 14th year as Vice President and General Manager of the 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2009 World Series Champion New York Yankees, was a standout second baseman under Coach Natoli from 1985-1989. Former New York Yankee Wally Pipp, who is best remembered as the player Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig replaced at first base to begin his streak of 2.130 consecutive games, studied architecture and played baseball at Catholic University from 1911-1913.

With 70 wins and two Landmark Conference Championship titles over the past three seasons, the Catholic University Cardinals have joined rank among the elite Division III programs in the East. Under the direction of 26th year head coach Ross Natoli, the Cardinals won back to back Landmark Conference titles in 2008 and 2009, while finishing 2nd in 2010 with a 13-5 regular season conference record. In 2010, the Cardinals placed five players on the All-Landmark Conference team. Dimitri Deoudes, Ron Esposito, and Mike Bzozowski were honored as First Team selections, while teammates Tim Mierzwa and Andrew Moldawer garnered Second Team accolades.

On the first team, junior outfielder Dimitri Deoudes finished the year with a team-leading .417 batting average including 10 doubles, two triples, one homerun, and 40 RBIs. He also added 53 put-outs and finished with a fielding percentage of .981. Senior relief pitcher Mike Bzozowski was 3-1 with 7 saves and a 2.55 ERA, and completed his career as the most prominent closer in CUA history with 26 saves. Fellow junior pitcher Ron Esposito finished his season with a 2.56 ERA and a 5-3 win/loss record on the mound for the Cardinals. He amassed 35 strikeouts in 52.2 innings.

On the second team, sophomore middle infielder Tim Mierzwa finished the year with a team leading 35 runs scored, a .333 batting average, 43 hits, 12 stolen bases and 17 RBIs while recording 104 assists and 26 double plays. Rounding out CUA's All-Conference selections was senior pitcher Andrew Moldawer who compiled a 4-2 record while striking out 38 batters in 51 innings of work. His career marks included an impressive 13-6 overall record, 4.18 ERA with 116 strikeouts in 174 innings. Two members of the CUA baseball team were honored with All-Region accolades by the American Baseball Coaches Association. Dimitri Deoudes was named to the Third Team All-South Region, while fellow Cardinal L.J. Travaglia earned the 2010 Rawlings Gold Glove Award. Travaglia started 35 games for the Cardinals hitting .358 with 44 hits including 12 doubles and 20 RBIs. His stellar defensive stats included 60 putouts, 113 assists, 25 double plays and a fielding percentage of .945.
