Ryan Durrence Inks Deal with Cubs

J Ryan Durrence has signed a free agent deal with the Chicago Cubs. Earlier in the week, the details were finalized for the B-CU first baseman/designated hitter, setting him right to work in the Cubs' minor league affiliate system before the week is out.

"I'm really excited for this opportunity," said Durrence. "I just want to thank all the coaches; Coach Melendez, Vazquez, Clark, and Crane; for everything they've taught me and everything they've done for me."

It will be a quick transition for the graduated B-CU senior, as he heads out Thursday to start his move to the pro ranks, taking a quick detour to the Cubs' facility in Arizona before landing in Boise, Idaho with the Boise Hawks, and then the season opens Friday.

"The program has been able to produce high-quality athletes for the last several years," Durrence continued. "Repeating MEAC Championships and going undefeated the last two years are big accomplishments for the team and coaching staff."

Durrence wrapped his Wildcat career among the career leaders for home runs and doubles. The three-year starter played in 173 games for the Maroon and Gold, finishing with 39 home runs, 49 doubles, and 168 RBI.

"I'm extremely happy for Ryan," said Head Coach Mervyl Melendez. "He definitely deserves to play in the professional ranks. The job that he was able to do for our program was invaluable and we're happy that he's making the next step. We wish him the best and know that he's going to succeed because he's a hard worker."

Durrence's deal makes it three Wildcats from the 2011 season ascending to the professional level, with catcher Peter O'Brien going to the Colorado Rockies in the third round of the MLB Draft, followed by pitcher Julio Morales in the 45th to the Kansas City Royals.
